I don't know much if anything about Donovan, but a friend of mine's favorite song was the one he sang about his shirt.

Yes, an excellent example of why he's so chest-burstingly lovable. Check it:

Do you have a shirt that you really love,
One that you feel so groovy in ?
You don't even mind if it starts to fade,
That only makes it nicer still.
I love my shirt, I love my shirt,
My shirt is so comfortably lovely.
I love my shirt, I love my shirt,
My shirt is so comfortably lovely.
Do you have some jeans that you really love,
Ones that you feel so groovy in ?
You don't even mind if they start to fray
That only makes them nicer still.
I love my jeans, I love my jeans,
My jeans are so comfortably lovely.
I love my jeans, I love my jeans,
My jeans are so comfortably lovely.
When they are taken to the cleaners,
I can't wait to get them home again.
Yes, I take 'em to the cleaners
And there they wash them in a stream,
      Scrub a rub dub dub
And there they wash them in a stream -
      Know what I mean.
Do you have some shoes that you really love,
Ones that you feel so flashy in ?
You don't even mind if they start to get some holes in
That only makes them nicer still.
I love my shoes, I love my shoes,
My shoes are so comfortably lovely.
I love my jeans, I love my jeans,
My jeans are so comfortably lovely.
I love my shirt, I love my shirt,
In fact I love my wardrobe.
I love my shirt, I love my shirt,
My shirt is so comfortably lovely.
I love my shirt, I love my shirt,
My shirt is so comfortably lovely.

I can't say that I know whole heaps about him either, maybe I can dig up some stuff and post it here and make this a big Donovan Teach-In tribe.

Yes, that song. My friend would play that and squeal all through it, then when it was over, she would say "don't you just want to hear it again? I think we should hear it again."

Then she'd play that song again, and squeal some more.

        Yeah.

All I really know is Season of the Witch and Mellow Yellow, but I'm totally willing to expand my horizons.

I like him because he's not only underappreciated, but he seems to be trashed for the "twee" and "lite" quality of his music everywhere his name turns up. Meanwhile, Belle and Sebastian, The Postal Service, et al are invoking his sound and winning immense popularity.
Also, he has the misfortune, to this day, of being labelled "Britain's Answer to Bob Dylan" which is just plain inaccurate, as Dylan's esthetic and audience are, as far as I'm concerned, from another (dirtier and more pretentious)planet altogether.

Well you've convinced me with all of your big words. I'm going to buy one of his CDs right now. Which do you suggest? (I'm serious)

I guess if you don't have any, you should go for "Troubadour: The Definitive Collection 1964-1976" which is a 2-disk set and looks to be thorough. I personally love "A Gift From a Flower to a Garden" right now.

First full album I heard of Donovan's was Open Road. I'd heard Mellow Yellow as well before that but I don't know where.... My dad had Open Road but I don't think he had something else. So that one has always had a special place in my heart. I really recommend Barabajagal, though, Sunshine Superman, and Catch the Wind. I haven't checked out Troubadour but it sounds like something I should get! I'm gonna invite my friend over who probably has just about all the albums...

      • Dylan vs. Donovan

        Wed, February 11, 2004 - 10:35 PM
I love Dylan as well, but yeah, Donovan is just way more enlightened. If you've ever watched the doc Don't Look Back by Pennebaker, it's really awesome to see how different they are. Donovan is just there smiling and having a good time, Dylan is all concerned about the potential competition.... That movie is worth seeing just to see Donovan singing "When the night has left you cold and feeling sad, I will show you that it cannot be so bad, Forget the one who went and made you cry, I'll sing a song for you, Thats's what I'm here to do, To sing for you..."

Dylan was trying unsuccessfully to belittle Donovan and comes off as such a nasty brat in that scene. I like your comment that Donovan's easy-going attitude is more "enlightened" than Dylan's competitiveness. (Reason number 1,283,098 to love Donovan.)

It is almost creepy to read what you wrote because I have a journal entry after seeing that movie where I wrote practically the same exact thing - and that was years ago when I was 13 or 14!! I love Dylan and Donovan equally but Donovan definitley is a rare soul - one of the most love-giving humans on the planet. Dylan is too, but in a different way. It's like you have to decipher his messages of love.
  • BOOTLEG DONOVAN

I love Donovan, so poetic, so fabooooo!
Mad John (came down from Burmingham, on a railway siding)
    Under the Greenwood Tree
I was Dancing Since I was Eight

Oh so poetic, he. I'm a songwriter and I do appreciate him. Yellow is the Color is damned beautiful too. The simple, pure love shines out of his songs, not lust.

I'll have to agree a Gift from a Flower to A Garden rocks, even if you don't get the metaphysical poets reference. I also like Marc Bolan, but he's more uneven than Donovan, and a bit fo a madman, though his guitar rocked. Saint Joni Mitchell is up there too!!!

Are there any BOOTLEG LIVE DONOVAN tapes about????

I think Donovan is so hot, he doesn't look that bad even know. He tugs at my heart strings, and plays them everytime I listine to his music. Sunshine Superman turns me on big time. DONOVAN ROCKS!

The most recent I have seen him is singing a new version of Altlantis with No Angels, it is good to hear him again. His voice still remains angelic.
